FORMATIONS: PLANTS BEYOND EMPIRE – SEEDS OF TIME WITH CLAIRE REDDLEMAN AND SOPHIE FUGGLE

In March 2024, I joined Sophie Fuggle as part of the Bonington Gallery’s ‘Formations’ series of talks on the theme of ‘Plants beyond Empire’. We discussed my visual research project #Ginkgos of the British Isles and Sophie’s latest research on the castor bean, considering how plants have become aligned with human ideas about time, seasons and cycles in the capitalist and colonial economy.

‘A Visual Experience of Silence in St Joseph’ – a conversation about penal heritage in French Guiana

A discussion with Glória Alhinho (Georgetown University), Aurélie Schneider (Association AGAMIS) and Samuel Tracol (Université de Guyane) about experiences, meanings and preservation at a remote and fascinating penal heritage site. Hosted by the Franco-Brazilian chair of The CoPALC. Photographs I took on the islands as part of the AHRC-funded research project ‘Postcards from the bagne’ are available on figshare.com - search ‘claire reddleman’

In conversation with cartographic artist Joyce Kozloff

A webinar hosted by DC Moore Gallery, discussing the exhibition Joyce Kozloff: Mind Mapping at 375 Hudson Street, New York in spring 2021. I wrote about some of Kozloff’s cartographic paintings in my book, in the chapter called ‘Reconfiguring the View From Nowhere: Collage and Complicity in Targets by Joyce Kozloff’. Many of the works we talk about can also be seen on her website, including the installation work Targets

Interviewed on Podcasts from the bagne

I discussed my work with Dr Ayshka Sené as part of the ‘Postcards from the bagne’ AHRC project, focusing especially on methods used to document the former penal colony sites, displays and material encountered on fieldwork in French Guiana and New Caledonia. Digital photography is used fairly extensively throughout and an archive of all of these images is freely available on figshare.com - search ‘claire reddleman’. The digital exhibition of my collages is now open
